StopTheMadness Pro overview
StopTheMadness Pro is a web browser extension that stops websites from making your browser harder to use, and it protects your privacy on the web. With a huge number of unique features, StopTheMadness Pro is one of a kind! Made by indie developer Jeff Johnson. The support link has documentation and my email address. StopTheMadness Pro includes extensions for Safari on macOS and iOS, as well as Chrome and Firefox on macOS.
What’s new in version 17.0
- JavaScript Snippets: The link URL is passed as arguments[0] to the script when run from the contextual menu of a link in Safari
- Custom JavaScript: New setting "Allow your custom JavaScript to run before DOMContentLoaded". By default, your custom JavaScript runs after DOMContentLoaded, but the new setting allows it to run as soon as possible after the web page starts loading.
- Redirects: Allow a JavaScript function enclosed in {} as the replacement.
- Hide page element: Made the dialog smaller on the page.
- Stop autoplaying video: Stop video from following you down the page on usatoday.com and journaldemontreal.com
- Show native video controls: Fixed on the new-style ESPN player
- Stop link trackers: Remove dsclid (DerbySoft) and WT.mc_id (WebTrends) parameters from URLs.
- Stop link trackers: Bypass ad.doubleclick.net, engage.squarespace-mail.com, www.gopjn.com, and c.pepperjamnetwork.com links.
- Hide some banners: Hide notification requests from the perfectly push WordPress plugin.
- Media Highlight on Page: Fixed an issue where the video couldn't be clicked on https://openai.com/sam-and-jony
- Firefox: Fixed a JavaScript error that can occur if beacon.enabled is false in the about:config window.
- Firefox: When an extension update is required, a page will open with a direct link to install the update instead of an indirect link to open the StopTheMadness Pro app. This change won't be seen until the next StopTheMadness Pro update.
- Enabled the hardened runtime.

Pretty nifty stuff. More specifically, for work and personal things I regularly need to save web pages as PDFs that are often full of ads that adblockers do not pick, like in-house ads (ads from same company that publishes a web page). With this extension, in the section CUSTOM CODE, I specify what to hide via CSS. And don't be afraid you if are not a techie — in the age of LLMs all your tech questions can be answered by a chatbot!

StopTheMadness Pro has single-handedly fixed every annoying website behavior I've encountered. The sheer number of customization options is mind-boggling—making it the Swiss Army knife of browser extensions that I didn't know I needed until I tried it.

CHECK if the Apple Mac App Store actually installed version 12.1 (or any other current update, for that matter). The "12.1" update only reinstalled 12.0 today while saying I had 12.1 installed. That sucks. So, I had to bash around in the App Store app to get it to actually "Update" to 12.1. Such is that state of Apple software these days. 😝 Blame Craig.

Unbelievebly comprehensive. So many options to fix website annoyances or customise and improve behaviour. Being able to inject custom CSS and JavaScript is very useful. I use it to hide ads that aren't blocked by Pi-Hole, plus override CSS on sites to improve legibility, hide stuff I don't want to see (not just ads), change fonts and fix a few website bugs. Incredibly useful - but also a little complex, simply down to the number of things it can do.
